How to choose the right neighborhood in Toulouse?

Summary

| Colivys

Being the fourth largest city in France, in the Midi-Pyrenees region, Toulouse is one of the favorite cities of the French. And for good reason. Ideally located, the capital of Occitania is one of the sunniest cities in France! The Pink City benefits from a fantastic quality of life and a privileged location, less than 2 hours from the sea and the mountains.

With as many neighborhoods as atmospheres, it will be difficult for you to find the neighborhood, on the banks or in the center, that will please you and that will be made for you, especially if you are moving there for the first time. Like many cities, housing is designed for families and includes large living spaces.

Prices are much more attractive than in other large French cities, but you still have to count between 450 and 500€ to rent a small studio far from the hyper center and the historic center. Depending on your profile and what you prioritize, your apartment search in Toulouse will be different. History enthusiast? Settle down at the Capitole. With its eponymous square, a large part of the history of Toulouse’s birth opens up to you. Somewhat touristy and therefore less affordable, this square is also filled with typical bars and restaurants.

You can combine the pleasures of culture with those of gastronomy. Do you love partying and nightlife? Head towards the Saint Pierre and Saint Michel neighborhoods. They are famous throughout the city for their bars and wine bars (emblems of the region) and other restaurants.

The best neighborhoods to live in Toulouse

Toulouse boasts no less than 20 neighborhoods, each different from the next. The city has a rich culture, with several sites and monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It also has a diverse population, making it an ideal place for expats looking for new friends! Depending on what you are looking for (proximity to the train station, university or city center), here are our 5 favorite neighborhoods in Toulouse:

Les Minimes - The cosmopolitan neighborhood

Located north of the city center, and very popular among Toulouse residents, this district is undoubtedly the most pleasant to live in. Perfect for students wanting to enjoy a low-cost neighborhood, it has seen the birth of famous personalities like Claude Nougaro.

Close to the Toulouse 1 Capitole University and the TBS business school, the district is known for its economic dynamism, thus hosting several major industrial sites. You will also be able to enjoy several small shops or supermarkets, all within walking distance. As for transportation, no worries! You will easily access line B and several buses that pass through the neighborhood. If you feel like it, you can reach the city center on foot or by bike, enjoying a stroll along the banks of the Garonne. For leisure, many shows are organized at the Café-theater, enough to entertain you from time to time.

Sports fan? You can take advantage of several sports facilities such as stadiums, swimming pools, or climbing walls… It is clear that this is the ideal district.

Matabiau - The neighborhood of great travelers

Matabiau is bordered by the Canal du Midi, it is a neighborhood to consider if you want to settle a few steps away from the city center, without suffering its tumults. By living in one of our apartments in Matabiau, you will be a stone’s throw away from transportation, including the eponymous station. You can thus reach the surrounding cities easily, especially if you work in the activity zone including Airbus and other business hubs.

You can reach the other districts by bus or metro. A cosmopolitan neighborhood, you will find everything you want: grocery stores, small shops, pharmacies, cafes, restaurants, etc.

Located southwest of the city, this is an old district, whose buildings date back to the 13th century. It has many beautiful buildings and monuments, including several churches and basilicas. Some of its streets are even classified. The district was once notorious, but that reputation is fading over time. It is at the heart of a vast urban redevelopment project. Several buildings will be constructed, and real living spaces will emerge with guinguettes and shared gardens. A beautiful project that will see the light of day by 2024. You will surely have time to see it if you stay in one of our rooms.

Saint-Cyprien - The lively neighborhood of Toulouse

Saint-Cyprien is a residential neighborhood located just north of downtown. It is convenient for students and professionals working in Toulouse, as well as for tourists visiting the city.

Its central location allows you to get around easily on foot, by bus or tram. If you’re an art lover of all kinds, the neighborhood also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. You won’t be able to pass by the dome of La Grave without stopping. Emblem of the city and the neighborhood, this must-see overlooks the quai de l’exil républicain.

As you can see, Saint-Cyprien is home to numerous cultural sites, museums, galleries, and theaters. Do you prefer nightlife, or do you want to combine both? Then it won’t disappoint you. The village spirit of the neighborhood is very present in its festive atmosphere. It is full of bars and restaurants where you can have a drink while enjoying live music! This neighborhood also hosts certain events every year, such as the Rio Loco festival.

Carmes - The haunt of the youth

Carmes is an ideal place for student youth, active people, and families. A few minutes from downtown, it is served by a multitude of transports. Its colorful architecture is typical, and for good reason.

It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Commercial and popular, Carmes is the lively neighborhood of Toulouse. It brings together a multitude of bars, restaurants, and terraces, whether in the heart of the neighborhood or on the banks of the Garonne. Gastronomy is omnipresent in this neighborhood. It is not for nothing that the Carmes halls are the central element of the life of the neighborhood’s inhabitants.

A must-see in the neighborhood. But Carmes does not only have food shops. Art lover, if you live in the neighborhood, you will be a few steps from the natural history museum or the zoo of Toulouse. Not bad to get a breath of fresh air and see another aspect of the city.

Les Chalets - The Toulouse Village

If you are looking for something a little more central and close to the university, then the Chalets is an excellent option. The neighborhood is connected by tramway and bus, which makes it easy to get around the city. Popular with young executives for its location and setting, you will also find several shops and restaurants on this side of the city.

The neighborhood is perfect if you like tranquility and green living environments as it has many nearby green spaces, including the beautiful Parc du Maréchal Leclerc. You can picnic there in the sun or walk along the tree-lined paths after work or your place of study. Like all neighborhoods in the city, The Chalets has several buildings, houses, and private mansions mixing Provençal and neo-Gothic style.

The neighborhood benefits from a perfect location, a stone’s throw from the Place du Capitole and the heart of Toulouse, full of life, and close to the Canal du Midi, perfect for enjoying the calm and the sound of the water. In terms of transport, you can reach Toulouse Matabiau station in less time than it takes to say it. If you wish to reach another point in the city, know that line B passes in the south of the neighborhood. Several bus stops will be at the bottom of your (future) building.

Your questions about Toulouse neighborhoods

Close to public transportation and the train station, calm and lively, Les Minimes is the best neighborhood for us. If you like to party, Saint-Pierre is a good choice.

If you like dynamic small towns, we recommend Aucamville, a young town close to public transportation, and Castelginest, a job market 10 kilometers from Toulouse.

Empalot, Bagatelle, and Le Mirail are Toulouse neighborhoods with a bad reputation. We do not recommend putting your suitcases there.
