How to choose the right neighborhood in Strasbourg?

Summary
| Colivys

As the economic hub of the Rhineland Europe, Strasbourg offers job opportunities beyond its borders. It is home to several major European institutions and is known for its technological expertise.

As a French Tech labeled city, Strasbourg and the surrounding towns host companies specializing in the automotive industry, healthcare, and eco-friendly building design. If you work for one of these institutions or companies, make sure to live in a nearby neighborhood such as Robertsau or one that is well-served by public transportation, like Esplanade or the Train Station district. The latter is especially convenient if you need to travel to Germany, Paris, or other European cities due to the quick travel time.

As a city with a human scale, Strasbourg attracts people with its quality of life. Ecology and respect for the environment are also criteria that have made Strasbourg famous. The city has developed a multitude of infrastructure and means in terms of mobility, waste reduction, second-hand goods, local culture, and more. You will not be surprised to see bike paths everywhere. They are very practical for getting around the city and its metropolitan area, going to work, or getting to your place of study.

All of these reasons (and more) have made the Strasbourg real estate market dynamic and competitive. In a year, apartment and house prices have increased by more than 8%. It has become difficult for those on tight budgets to move closer to their workplace or place of study. This is why coliving has become a sustainable solution in the best neighborhoods of Strasbourg.

The best neighborhoods to live in Strasbourg

Strasbourg has about twenty neighborhoods, each with its own uniqueness. When you arrive in an unfamiliar city, it can be difficult to find the place that suits you. That’s why we offer our selection of the 5 best neighborhoods in Strasbourg.

Here we go!

Esplanade - The student district

Bordering the Bourse and Krutenau districts, Esplanade also attracts young people with its proximity to the central campus of the University of Strasbourg. It is an affordable neighborhood, with modern buildings, which benefits from all the services and advantages of the surrounding areas.

This is also where we have chosen to establish ourselves. Although the neighborhood has a sometimes bad reputation, it deserves to be known. If you choose to live or walk around here, know that everything you need and will need is here. The Esplanade district also has one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Strasbourg: the Citadelle Park.

Covering more than 10 hectares, it was once a military fortress in the perfect location for keeping an eye on the enemy. Today, you can spend time enjoying this nature, observing ducks and turtles, or practicing some outdoor sports. By living in Esplanade, reaching the city center will be a breeze. It will only take you a 10-minute walk to get to the green lung of Strasbourg.

Bourse-Krutenau - The favorite neighborhood of young people

Bourse and Krutenau are two different neighborhoods that are often associated with each other due to their proximity to the hypercenter and their location next to each other.

Despite their opposite architectural styles (one was built in the Middle Ages with traditional facades, and the other was completely renovated), they both have a special and lively atmosphere that appeals to residents. Many students have chosen to settle here to enjoy the nightlife and the many bars, restaurants, and shops.

The University of Strasbourg being nearby is also one of the main reasons that has pushed them to move here. Located on the banks of the Rhine, the Krutenau docks offer a magnificent view where you can take a walk, especially at nightfall. The image of Krutenau has radically changed over the years. Formerly known to be dangerous, the neighborhood has gradually gentrified.

Bourse, on the other hand, is located on an island, which gives it a unique and timeless atmosphere.

Neudorf - A village in the city

Located in the south of Strasbourg, Neudorf is a diverse neighborhood populated by students, young professionals, and families. In fact, it is the most populous neighborhood in all of Strasbourg.

Its diversity is not limited to the characteristics of its inhabitants, as the types of housing also vary. Indeed, everyone can find an apartment in a building on the main streets or a beautiful house a little further away for a shared living experience. If you prefer quiet but dynamic places, Neudorf is the neighborhood for you.

With its cultural richness with the City of Music and Dance, Neudorf also has a large shopping center (Rivétoile) perfect for those moments when you don’t want to travel far to the center of Strasbourg.

You will also find a market hall and a former neighborhood cinema with remarkable architecture converted into a performance hall. It is also well served by public transport and bike paths, allowing you to reach the city center or the surrounding cities (and Germany).

La Petite-France - The essence of Strasbourg

You couldn’t have missed this picturesque neighborhood. Located in the heart of historic Strasbourg between the two arms of the Ill river, it is the most central and typical neighborhood of the city.

A must-see (at least for a walk), you won’t be able to ignore its colorful half-timbered buildings that will make you feel like you’re in an enchanted world. Appreciated for its prime location, the residents of Petite France are young people, retirees, or families who all live together in this neighborhood right next to the city center and all possible amenities.

If you choose to live here, you can do your shopping in one of the many food shops or supermarkets in the area, go shopping in numerous stores, visit the many monuments such as the imposing Strasbourg Cathedral, or take a walk along the Ill river. When winter comes, the neighborhood transforms to host the impressive Christmas market, world-renowned. This architectural gem full of history has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.

If you think it may not be the best neighborhood to live in Strasbourg, La Petite France is undoubtedly the one where you will spend all your time.

The Train Station - An Eclectic Neighborhood

Here is our latest favorite. Often saddled with a bad reputation, we’re going to show you that this train station neighborhood is worth a visit. Cheaper than the city center neighborhoods, it is no less great.

Popular, it welcomes mixed residents that give it all its charm. Bobos, young people, seniors, and families have chosen to reside in a contrast between the modernity of the train station and the traditional architecture of Strasbourg buildings. If you like art, you will find street art works at every street corner (and every possible place).

Your photographer’s soul, whether amateur or professional, will thank you. Just like your Instagram account and your hundred followers. The contrast does not stop there. In parallel with the fast-paced life, in the rhythm of the comings and goings of trains, there is the calm of nature. Indeed, shared and collective gardens have taken life on old abandoned lands.

Open to everyone, it may be an opportunity for you to cultivate your own vegetables and share wonderful moments discovering your new neighbors.

Why is it good to live in Strasbourg?

As the ultimate Eurometropolis, Strasbourg will undoubtedly seduce you if you also like to live on European time. Once settled there, you will be assured of a change of scenery because Strasbourg is not a typical French city. Cosmopolitan, it has integrated everything that makes the charm of European capitals such as Berlin in the East, Amsterdam in the North, or even Paris in the West.

If you like the slow life, you will be captivated by its tranquility. With nearly 600 km of cycle paths, it is the fourth European city with the largest number of arteries dedicated to cyclists.

Walking around Strasbourg means taking the time to admire its colorful facades, the calm along the Rhine, and to smell the delicious scent of pretzels. Living in Strasbourg also means being very close to the Vosges mountains, perfect for a weekend or a day of skiing, and very close to Germany. As a border city, you will only need about ten minutes to reach the other side of the Rhine by car or public transport (tram, bus).

Strasbourg is also the heart of Europe. Whether you are a student or a young professional, it may be where you will work. As the European capital, this is where you will find all the major institutions such as the European Court of Human Rights, the European Parliament, or even the Council of Europe.

Your Questions about Strasbourg Neighborhoods

If you are young and enjoy going out, we recommend Bourse-Krutenau. It is one of the most dynamic neighborhoods to live in.

If you work or study in the Alsatian capital, Schiltigheim is the place for you. A charming university town, it allows you to reach Strasbourg in no time while enjoying a very pleasant living environment.

Hautepierre and Elsau are part of the city’s priority neighborhoods. Considered risky areas, they do not have a good reputation.
