Ah, Paris, the capital of France. The Eiffel Tower. With its 20 districts and hundreds of neighborhoods, it’s easy to get lost if you’re unfamiliar with the city. The center of Paris is full of gems: if you love the Parisian nightlife and you’re a student, head to Oberkampf or the Marais for a drink with your friends.

If you’re a lover of history and old buildings, head to the left bank where the Latin Quarter, Saint-Michel, and Saint-Germain des Prés are waiting for you. If you like to take walks, head to the Canal Saint Martin or the Buttes-Chaumont park. Colivys will tell you everything to choose the best neighborhood in this open-air museum, which will become your future home!

Depending on your search criteria, your favorite neighborhood will surely not be the same as your neighbor’s or your sister’s. To find the one that suits you best:

Define your budget. Living in Paris will be expensive especially if you wish to settle in the heart of the capital. This essential step will determine the neighborhood in which you can settle, and it’s the best way to visualize what your future life will look like.

Don’t hesitate to browse the internet, indicating the criteria that you want in your future neighborhood (calm, hipster, lively, artistic, etc.)

Check the reviews! Browse the internet and online review sites, walk around the neighborhood where you want to settle and don’t hesitate to ask the residents their feelings. You’ll see, they are surely the ones who will guide you best.

Paris neighborhoods by quality of life

Paris is one of the most sought-after cities in France. It attracts thousands of people every year with its multiple job opportunities and unmatched cultural offerings. But is Paris a city where it’s good to live?

How do you evaluate the quality of life in a neighborhood?

Various surveys and rankings have been conducted over the years to guide future Parisians. These have taken into account criteria that are useful to us in our daily lives, such as access to public transportation, environment, proximity to shops, or even security.

A study conducted in 2017 by the Journal du Net ranked the Saint-Merri neighborhood in first place. Located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris next to the Halles district, this neighborhood stands out for its many local shops and public transport within a 5-minute walk. Enough to satisfy families and young professionals. The second district where it’s good to live is the Sorbonne district. This historical district on the left bank has numerous educational institutions, which gives it this position.

Finally, in third place, we find the Palais-Royal district. As a central district of Paris, it is one of the least noisy in the capital because it has few inhabitants.

Another privileged place for Parisians and newcomers is République. Located at the junction of the Arts-et-Métiers, Enfants Rouges, Folie-Méricourt, and Porte-Saint-Martin districts, it is attractive due to its proximity to a multitude of public transportation. They allow you to reach other strategic points in the capital in no time. République also has a large number of bars and restaurants that attract an eclectic and dynamic population.

If you are looking for a neighborhood with an atypical atmosphere different from the rest of Paris, the Batignolles district is the one for you! Nestled in the 17th arrondissement, this former hamlet was built on a vineyard because yes, you may not know it, but Paris was famous for its vineyards and wines! But that was before! Very popular with families, the district also attracts young professionals without children and students.

This old village has kept all its charm: the church in the middle of the square, a large covered market, numerous restaurants, bistros, and shops, as well as its cobbled streets. A small plus compared to its neighbors, it has the first eco-district labeled in Paris. Another district that might appeal to you if you like small villages in the heart of Paris is Convention.

This district located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris provides a peaceful living environment for its inhabitants who benefit from a more moderate rent than that of the surrounding districts. Its architecture is as varied as its former artist residents: Haussmann-style buildings and buildings from the 70s blend together harmoniously. Its proximity to the Montparnasse train station and public transportation makes it a preferred district if you wish to live in Paris.

The neighborhoods of Paris by Colivys

At Colivys, we also have our favorite neighborhoods and we want to share them with you! Discover them just below:

Les Champs-Élysées

As Joe Dassin once said, “Aux Champs-Elysées, aux Champs-Elysées. Au soleil, sous la pluie, à midi ou à minuit. Il y a tout ce que vous voulez aux Champs-Elysées.

Meaning “In the sunshine, in the rain, at noon or at midnight. There’s everything you want at the Champs-Élysées”. This emblematic neighborhood, very popular with tourists during the day, regains its tranquility at nightfall. Mostly residential and composed of offices, you can find iconic monuments of the city here. Its restaurants are expensive, but if you stroll down the streets adjacent to the Champs-Elysées avenue, you will find options at affordable prices. It’s also one of the best served neighborhoods in Paris in terms of public transportation.

Charonne

Located in the heart of the 20th district of Paris and a stone’s throw from the Père Lachaise cemetery, this peaceful neighborhood with its village-like atmosphere will appeal to families and young people looking for affordable housing. In fact, this is where we chose to locate some of our accommodations.

Auteuil

With its chic atmosphere and Haussmannian buildings, Auteuil is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Paris. Residential, it contains exceptional places, several villas, and a lot of green spaces like the Bois de Boulogne.

Picpus

This is where you’ll find Daumesnil, a peaceful family neighborhood. It boasts large green spaces including the Bois de Vincennes, and a multitude of local shops. If you love stone architecture, typical of Paris, you will adore this neighborhood!

Saint-Fargeau

The most sought-after neighborhood of the 20th district has retained all the charm of the old industrial area on which it was built. Entirely residential, it has the advantage of being an affordable neighborhood, surrounded by several green spaces and served by metro line 11.

Porte Saint-Martin

Crossed by the Canal Saint-Martin, it is one of the liveliest and youngest neighborhoods in Paris. It houses a multitude of educational institutions (schools, colleges, high schools) and shops. It is also very well served by public transportation.

Volontaires-Vaugirard

Leafy and family-friendly, the neighborhood is one of the liveliest in the capital thanks to the many food shops it hosts and the large events organized at the Exhibition Center. For these reasons, it is very well served by public transportation.

Roquette

This is where you’ll find Voltaire, a popular and artistic neighborhood that remains attractive in terms of real estate. It has many restaurants and bars and attracts a clientele and a population of young professionals to ensure the party spirit endures into the night.

Clignancourt

Authentic and popular, this neighborhood is fortunate to be located next to the Montmartre hill. Away from the tourist tumult, it hosts the famous flea market. Its neighborhood life and its amenities will appeal to both young professionals and families.

La Chapelle

A cosmopolitan neighborhood, you will find a multitude of South Asian shops (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka). A brief escape is assured. This upscale neighborhood is also very well served by public transportation.

As you can see, the rental market in Paris is very tight and prices remain high. Coliving then becomes the solution for housing in central and strategic neighborhoods for your daily life. This way of life allows you to share a large apartment in Paris intra-muros with several tenants. This has the double advantage of creating social connections, useful when you arrive from another region. So, are you ready to move into Colivys coliving in Paris?

Your questions about Parisian neighborhoods

Paris has many lively and pleasant neighborhoods. If you are looking for a quiet and residential neighborhood, we recommend Exelmans and Etoile. If, on the other hand, you prefer a lively neighborhood, the Voltaire district is for you.

If you want to live peacefully, we recommend focusing on the less touristy neighborhoods of Paris. Turn to the 20th, 15th, and 7th arrondissements.

Paris is a safe and pleasant city to live in, which has some places that are less frequented than others. However, it benefits from countless attractions, bars, shops, boutiques that make its inhabitants happy.

If you want to live near Paris at a lower cost, we recommend the nearby suburbs and the cities of Rueil-Malmaison, Ivry-sur-Seine, Clichy, and Levallois-Perret.
