Where to live in Bordeaux ? Choose your neighborhood wisely

Summary

| Colivys

For several years, Bordeaux has been attracting more and more French people looking for a more pleasant environment. Located on the Atlantic arc, it currently has over 250,000 residents who have succumbed to the city’s advantages and services: ideal geographical location, with many established and under-construction cycle paths, a lively city with strong economic development. A number that is steadily increasing. Given this frenzy, it has become difficult to buy. As the public turns to renting, the Bordeaux real estate market has seen a revaluation of its rental prices. It has become increasingly difficult to find a rental property available. And if there are available properties, the prices are far too high.

A young and dynamic city, nearly 30% of the Bordeaux population is between 20 and 35 years old. These young people likely love to go out and be at the heart of life. If that’s the case for you, we recommend settling in the city center, a popular and therefore very expensive area where we have nevertheless established a few of our rooms. Besides these aspects, it will be essential for you to live in a neighborhood well served by buses and trams for your daily life. You’re in luck because the majority of the neighborhoods are well served. If you still need a bit more help, Colivys assists you by offering rooms in different neighborhoods of Bordeaux to meet all your expectations!

The best neighborhoods to rent in Bordeaux

Bordeaux has 8 neighborhoods, all different. Depending on what you’re looking for and your desires, the neighborhood of your dreams is probably one of our 5 favorites:

La Bastide - A former rehabilitated wasteland

This former industrial district is today the green lung of Bordeaux, with the Parc des Berges and the Botanical Garden. Connected to the right bank of the city by the beautiful Stone Bridge, the trendy district of La Bastide was, against all expectations, one of the least appreciated districts of Bordeaux. Its rehabilitation in the 2000s has changed the game. Now favored by young professionals, the district is full of places and monuments to discover. It notably houses the oldest Bordeaux station, the ancestor of the Saint-Jean station, a site now transformed into a cinema. So it’s in this most pleasant district that Colivys has established some of its most beautiful apartments. It’s now one of the trendiest and most festive places in the city. Both Bordeaux residents and inhabitants of the surrounding municipalities are seduced by the quality of life offered by the district. An ideal and rich living environment where everyone meets to have a drink, party, and admire the numerous works of street art that La Bastide offers.

City Center - The heart of the city

As its name suggests, this is the central district of Bordeaux. Located to the west of the Garonne, it is home to the Grands Hommes district, Old Bordeaux, the Quinconces, and the Saint-Pierre district. It alone represents almost half of the total area of Bordeaux. Amazing, isn’t it? If you are a lover of art and history, downtown Bordeaux is for you. With its imposing historical monuments such as the Grand Theatre and the Place de la Bourse, there is plenty to visit and marvel at. This square with its typical 18th-century architecture is indeed one of the emblems of the city. Nestled on the former royal square, it has been home since 2006 to the largest water mirrors in the world. As surprising as it may seem, they have become one of the most frequented places in Bordeaux.

The city center is also synonymous with shopping, and it is teeming with another emblem: the rue Sainte-Catherine. Europe’s longest shopping street will delight you with its 3 kilometers of ready-to-wear shops and restaurants. You can even go to the Bordeaux gallery, one of the oldest shopping passages in Bordeaux, one of the entrances to which is on this street. So it is here that Colivys has decided to establish some of its apartments in Bordeaux. It is indeed at the heart of the urban development rehabilitation project: Euratlantique.

Nansouty / Saint-Genès - The contrasting one

To the south of Bordeaux, just a few cable lengths from the city center, is another neighborhood with a village feel. Nansouty / Saint Genès is a bit like fraternal twins. One is popular while the other is bourgeois. It is this appreciable contrast and the beauty of the 19th-century facades that pushed Colivys to set up its apartments in Saint Genès.

A residential neighborhood but with a village heart (another one), by living there, you will appreciate the proximity of the neighborhood to public transport and especially the tram line B. Perfect for getting to work, your place of study, or simply downtown Bordeaux. If you like green spaces, you will be served because the neighborhood is full of them. You can walk there, do sports but also appreciate the calm of these spaces.

Les Chartrons - Bordeaux's bohemian side

Named after the Charterhouse Abbey that was located in its heart, this neighborhood was once the lair of wine merchants. Quite logical for the Bordeaux region, right? Today it houses a museum that is entirely devoted to this history, on Rue Boirie. Otherwise, this neighborhood is a bit like taking a leap in time, somewhat in the style of “Back to the Future.” Its building facades and atmosphere have remained frozen in the last century. If you are a lover of art and antiques, you will be delighted by what the neighborhood exudes. It is teeming with small shops, antique dealers, and second-hand dealers. Its village-like air in the heart of Bordeaux and its narrow streets only enhance its certain charm.

Don’t hesitate to take a stroll on the docks, arranged for beautiful walks or sports activities. Among the high points of interest, we can count the Halles des Chartrons, today transformed into a cultural space, and the Chartrons Theater. It is also here that the City of Wine is located. It houses a museum related to the past and present winemaking of the Bordeaux region, as well as office spaces. We therefore understand better what attracts new inhabitants and newcomers to the Chartrons.

Bassin à flot, Bacalan - Isséo, the maritime side of Bordeaux

Just a few meters from the Chartrons district, you’ll find a major industrial hub of Bordeaux. The neighborhood welcomed sailors from around the world in the 1800s.

This maritime past and the import of cod, or “Bacalhau” in Portuguese, could be the origin of the neighborhood’s name. Unless it is related to one of the emblematic families of the neighborhood, the “Bacalans”. More to come… In the meantime, you won’t forget it thanks to the Sea and Marine Museum, opened in 2018. You might find your future university campus there. As an eclectic city, urbanism and nature coexist for everyone’s pleasure. If you want to go to the peripheral neighborhoods like La Bastide, we advise you to take the Chaban Delmas bridge, built especially for this.

This technological and architectural feat is the largest lifting structure in Europe. Amazing! The neighborhood has undergone a great transformation. Numerous projects have been launched to make this neighborhood even more attractive and dynamic. Shopping centers, corporate headquarters, marina, or even halls have emerged a few years ago.

Living in Bordeaux is the dream for all those who want to enjoy a pleasant, calm lifestyle, filled with entertainment and activities!

With an exceptional quality of life

According to a ranking established by Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD) in 2022, Bordeaux again ranks in the top 15 cities where it’s good to live.

Its tranquility is a major factor. Bordeaux is at the center of everything you could want for a pleasant life. Close to the sea, the city is just over 45 minutes from the beaches and the Arcachon basin. So get ready for swims and weekend walks! Do you love the mountains? The Pyrenees are only 4 hours away by car. It’s a bit far, yes, but it’s quite pleasant if you want to spend a weekend or a few days on the slopes. Bordeaux is also very well connected to other metropolises like Paris. It will allow you to get to both cities in less than 2 hours.

If we focus more on the city itself, Bordeaux is the “well-being” metropolis par excellence. It offers you an exceptional atmosphere, far from the tumult of other metropolises. Bordeaux benefits from a very well established transport network. All the axes of the city (and even beyond) are served by buses and trams, which will facilitate your life in the beautiful sleeping city. Plus, it’s ecological, what more could you ask for? To continue in this direction, the city has 40 hectares of pedestrian streets and should increase to 65 by 2024. Everything is brought together for your comfort to be respected.
