The 9 best spots to admire a sunset in Marseille

If you ever have the chance to visit or live in the city of Marseille, don’t miss these amazing seaside locations. They offer some of the most breathtaking views from the Phocaean city. This list is a little secret, well-guarded by the Colivys team. We’re counting on you not to spill the beans and to fully enjoy these magnificent sunsets!

The Corniche Propeller

Comfortably seated on a bench, conveniently located near the Memorial of the Repatriates from Algeria, you’ll have an unrivalled view to appreciate the endless expanse of the horizon as it meets the sea. You’ll thus witness a magnificent spectacle: the day falling in the most beautiful way.

La Basilique Notre-Dame De La Garde À Marseille

Rocks below Notre Dame de la Garde

Thanks to the height of the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica, you can take in the entire city. From this privileged vantage point, your view will extend beyond the narrow streets and picturesque rooftops that characterize the city to marvel at a beautiful sunset.

Flat or White Rocks

Upon reaching the peninsula of Cassis, you’ll need to walk another good ten minutes to face the Cap Canaille. Sure, it requires a bit of effort, but trust me, it’s the perfect spot for a picnic on the beach or a swim away from the tourist crowds. You can also choose to relax on the terrace, if you prefer, and soak up the stunning sunset colors while comfortably sipping on a cocktail.

Les Calanques De Marseille
Le Cap Canaille

Cap Canaille

Located halfway along the ridge road, you’ll need to walk about fifty meters before reaching the cliff edge. If you’re scared of heights, we advise against going there or getting too close to the edge. However, if you’re up for the thrill, you’ll find the best spot to appreciate the setting sun, overlooking the entire bay of Cassis. From the top of the cape, you’ll have one of the most beautiful views in all of France. You wouldn’t want to miss this!

Monkey Bay

Monkey Bay is one of the best spots in Marseille to recharge by the water. It’s also an incredible slice of paradise for a “beach afternoon” (or rather rock, given its lunar panorama) if the weather cooperates. You and your roommates or colivers can enjoy this location to witness some spectacular sunsets.

La Baie Des Singes
Palais Du Pharo De Nuit

Pharo Palace

Nestled majestically on the coast, this castle boasts a truly breathtaking view of the glittering Mediterranean Sea waters. Its privileged position on the edge of the Old Port makes it a strikingly beautiful place where you can watch the sunset in a setting fit for royalty, and all within the city center of Marseille. Cool, isn’t it?

Malmousque Cove

This is a very charming small harbor with a clear and direct view of the Endoume archipelago and Degaby island. The setting of this small calanque is simply superb for admiring the sunset facing the sea.

L’Anse du Bain des Dames

Because there’s nothing quite like soaking up a beach sunset, we’re inviting you now to head to l’Anse du Bain des Dames (also known as Ladies’ Bath Cove). A bit more out-of-the-way than some of the other spots we’ve discussed, this fine sandy beach located at Pointe Rouge is one of the nicest. Though it’s not one of the largest beaches on the coast, it’s a hidden gem among those in the know in Marseille, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding a spot. With its quaint blue shacks, it’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset reflecting on the Mediterranean Sea.

Frioul Islands

For this last exceptional place, we’re taking you a few kilometers away from the center of Marseille. Grab a ticket, hop on a boat heading towards the Frioul Islands. This spectacular island boasts numerous little coves and rocky beaches, restaurants, and various entertainment spots. Despite all this, it remains very wild and untouched. We suggest doing some hiking there, soaking up the sun and cooling off in the refreshing water before marveling at the incredible sunset engulfing all of Marseille. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss.

Les Iles Frioul Marseille

If you’re a night owl, we invite you to head to one of these locations around 9 p.m. in the summer to catch a view of the setting sun around 10 p.m. In the winter, or if you’re brave enough to face the chilly weather, we recommend getting there around 4 p.m. to enjoy the sunset around 5 p.m.

Know that these little corners of paradise are equally wonderful for early birds. Your perspective will be all the more different. If you’re up for it, we recommend getting there at dawn to enjoy the full splendor of the sunrise which occurs around 6 a.m. That’s for the summer. In winter, you can sleep a little longer and catch a sunrise around 8 a.m. It’s perfect for a stop before heading to class or work.
